Equity
benchmark indices witnessed profit taking at higher levels and ended
the last day of 2019 on a negative note. The broader markets
outperformed as BSE Midcap closed flat, whereas the BSE Smallcap index
closed with gains of 0.4%. Market participants will keep a close watch
on Auto sales data to be announced tomorrow.
Amongst the sectors, auto, banking, IT and oil & gas ended with losses, whereas realty and metal closed marginally higher.
The Sensex ended down 304 points or 0.73% at 41,254, and the Nifty fell 87 points at 12,169.
Coal India, NTPC, GAIL and Grasim were the top gainers, while Zee, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Auto and Reliance Industries were the top losers.
The most active stocks on the NSE were Reliance Industries, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Tata Motors, Axis Bank, and SBI.
On the international front, European shares traded lower on Tuesday as investors locked in gains after a record rally. The STOXX 600 index fell 0.3%. The FTSE slipped 0.2%, while German and Italian markets were shut for the holidays.
